rink expenditures, 2007-2008 season

It was a great season, even if it was a constant battle to get the snow off the rink, especially since we didn't always have access to a reliable snowblower.

We finally got our own $3000 snowblower back, even if it was too late to use it during the March Break. It's currently in the City depot on Moodie waiting for a spare part. The City plans to install a concrete bunker in the park to store it securely and safely, so next year will be a lot easier.

We did a lot of shoveling by hand- it's a lot more work but it gave a wide variety of local teens a chance to earn some money and get fit. It's also more environmentally friendly.

Shoveling by hand is not nearly as efficient as using a snowblower in conjunction with hand shoveling, so that drove up costs. We also had the building open and the rink supervised for very long hours, many more than the 30 hours the contract called for. That also drove up costs.

We had some vandalism in the building and some shovels stolen, so money was needed to cover that.

We also provided a high level of surface- we almost always flooded if there was a possibility to do so. We removed snow promptly too, so we maximized the opportunities for skating.

We spent $3931.51 on the rink (see below). I put in countless hours of work myself but I didn't pay myself a dime, so there's $768.49 left over for the community association.

More transparency is better than not enough transparency (which is what you usually get with bureaucracies) when it come to the spending of tax dollars, so I'll list below how the money was spent.

The City contract provides us with $4700 if we meet all the terms of the agreement.

Throw another wallaby on the barby! Yum Yum!

Wendell the Wallaby visited Bells Corners today. He was spotted near the intersection of Moodie and Hunt Club. By noon about a dozen searchers carrying pillowcases were tramping through the woods. Too bad Wendell didn't try to make a right turn off Hunt Club onto Moodie between 7 and 9 a.m.- the police would have nabbed him. They set up there almost every morning. An $80 ticket will make him think twice before going on the run again! I'm amazed at how quickly he got here from Kemptville- he obviously isn't using OC Transpo.
